The Smart Bucket: Composting Made Easy
Waste is any unwanted or unusable material, substance, or by-product. Waste can be divided into two types: non-degradable waste and biodegradable waste. Nondegradable waste is any waste that cannot be decomposed such as bottles, plastics, broken glasses, among others. On the other hand, biodegradable waste is waste that can be composted into manure such as kitchen leftovers and dried leaves. Since about 60% of the waste produced in Nepali households is organic or biodegradable waste, we have a product that can help you manage it: our very own Smart Bucket.
The Smart Bucket is used to manage organic waste which is generated from the kitchen or garden. Those organic waste can be used as mulch in gardening. The Smart Bucket can convert your organic waste and turn it into compost and better yet, can also be used in limited space. The Smart Bucket is smaller in size and can be easily carried from one place to another.
The Smart Bucket was launched by Praramva Biotech in marketing collaboration with Doko Recyclers about a year ago to encourage the public to handle their organic waste. The survey was taken from our team and as a result, about 60% of waste in the capital city Kathmandu alone develops from an inappropriate organization of waste. This waste becomes a major source of hazardous gases like methane which is a volatile greenhouse gas.
Think about it, 60% of our waste at home is organic, 25-30% is recyclable and 10-15% is landfill waste. So if we segregate at home and compost, we would save an incredible 85-90% of all waste from entering the landfill. Composting is quite simple actually and can start in the comfort of our homes. By setting aside vegetable and fruit peels, leftover food, coffee grounds, and tea leaves for home composting; separating dry recyclables and landfill waste, you can drastically reduce the volume of waste going to sisdole.
The Smart Bucket comes in a set of two 20 liter buckets, filter, tap, and with a lid which is usually attached to the bucket. It also comes with 2 kg of decomposer, a shovel, and a user manual. The purpose of the lid with the net is for the ventilation and barrier from unwanted stuff and pests entering into the buckets. The tap drains out leachate (excess liquid collected during the decomposition process). This results in fast decomposition and controls foul odor. The role of the filter is to strain out the leachate from solid organic waste. The objective of adding decomposer in the smart bucket is to turn kitchen waste into compost faster due to fermenting action carried out by the microbes. A shovel is also provided to stir the contents of the bucket each week so that the manure decomposes at an even rate. We have also added camphor to neutralize the smell of organic waste.
The Smart Bucket is designed to manage the kitchen waste for the family of 4-5 members for about 25-28 days, generating 1kg organic waste per day. We can add more Smart Bucket sets as per the size of the family members. The whole conversion process of organic waste compost takes about 60-90 days reliant upon the proper handling of the kit.
We have about 100+ happy users for Smart Bucket: Home composting system to date. We guide and reach out to our users in case they have a query on Smart Bucket usage.
